I think she was just letting us know that they're available.

Oh..okay.

It got to the point I just stopped looking at their critical updates. I loaded the critical update software so my system checks the website everyday and once it finds something it lets me know and I just tell it to go ahead and install. Very rarely do I double check before loading their updates.

Boy, how times have changed.

There was a time, not so long ago, when many viewed Critical updates "critically" and wondered if plusses outweighed the minuses i.e. is it going end up in a reformat job.

Now they are downloaded and installed in the background, with many not knowing what they are or what they do.

It's certainly a Brave New World with XP.

I check the updates before I download. I post Security and windows XP updates at other Boards, but if you all don't need them, I won't post anymore.

and I'm not criticising you for doing that - or Iman for doing it automatically.

I'm just commenting on the increasing trend with XP of downloading "updates" in the background without fear of what they may or may not do to the system.

In the past, not all updates were trouble-free.

Thanks! Sorry I misunderstood Iman74! I wonder if all the updates are all trouble free.

No such thing as "All updates being all trouble free.
Most are fine, but there's always the odd one that, when mixed with the wrong hardware, causes a crash.
Of the 4 systems running XP I have, 2 get the updates and install automatically. I don't care if they crash, it's too easy to restore them to worry about it, but they have never crashed.
One is set to notify when they're available, and then I decide when and if I install them.
The other is set to...actually almost all services are simply turned off, including updates. I do those manually, if and when I decide, from http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...corporate=true

Thanks reboot! I've never downloaded automatically. I like to save to disk.
