2000 Server Alias

I have an old Windows P133 NT4 server (miqass) that has 40 gig worth of file shares on it. I would like to move all these file shares to a new Windows 2000 server (miqads). My plan was to restore the files from backup to maintain their file security, then re-setup the share permission for each share. Then, my plan is/was to create an alias that will point the old computer name (miqass) to the new server IP (10.11.0.28) and so everyone will automatically start using their files on the new server seamlessly. Riiiiight.
Problem: I did all this, but when linking to the new computer by using the old alias computer name (miqass), it will not show any shared files. Only when I use the real computer name or IP will the file shares show up. This works fine with Windows NT4, but will not work with 2000. Anyone have a fix or way I can do this?
