Sounds like you might have the full version. If so you need to format c: and then boot to the cd. ONLY do this if it is the full windows 98 disk!!!!!
win98 update has it listed on all the cds I have seen. cat

Make sure you backup your data before you format.

Sorry catfishjoe, not right.
No, you don't need to format the machine. You can do an upgrade with a full install CD. In Explorer, rename win.com to win.bak It's found in the c:\windows folder. Go to Start > Run > and browse to the Windows98 CD, and click Setup. |

Don't forget that during the setup, you will be prompted for an installation directory which will be defaulted to C:\WINDOWS.000, you must rename this back to C:\WINDOWS or else it will appear as a clean install. If you forget, don't panic, post here, it is reversible.

One thing I can always count on, and that's HAL reminding people about the default folder, when I always forget.
How many times is this now?

oops, so the way i said would not have worked?
confused. I would be loading all drivers again, right? It would be preferable to not do that. cat Last edited by catfishjoe_1; 04-17-2003 at 09:17 PM. |

No, you probably won't have to load drivers all over again, but it depends on the difference between the Win95 and the Win98 versions of those drivers. Some will work, some may not.
You do NOT need to format the drive. You can use any full version of 98 as an upgrade to 95. The way you've explained it, means a full format, losing all the data and drivers etc. There's no real need to do that, as 95 upgrades nicely from 95. |
