missing video codec

There is a teacher in my school who got a video CD from his son. It contains an MPG video that plays on my computer in both Windows Media Player 8 and RealPlayer.

But it doesn't play on the teacher's computer. The audio plays, but not the video. When I tried to play it in Media Player, it tried to download a codec, but gave an error in trying to do so. RealPlayer said that one of the media streams was unsupported.

How can I figure out what codec this MPG requires? I know there's a place that will show the installed codecs on my computer (Windows XP), but I can't remember where it is.

To see what codecs you have installed go to , control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager. Under the sounds ,videos and game controllers should be listed what audio and video codecs that are installed.

it's not a divx file. (I had already downloaded it before posting, and it wouldn't play it. The file has an MPG extension.

Would you happen to know how to see the installed codecs on the Win ME machine? It's not in the same place as on XP. I tried again to use Media Player to play the video but it got an error when trying to download the required coded.

To see which codecs installed on win me , i think you have to go to control panel -> multimedia and click devices tab.

Maybe you could download a video codec pack, it may update or install the video codec required to play the mpg. Here are 2 sites with codec packs:
