Exclamation odd windows XP update icon at taskbar!

Its been 2 days since this icon-which looks like the windows xp update icon is in place beside the time. Now how do I get rid of it. Its downloading something-but its still 4% complete. I don't know what its downloading-and its slowing my pc. The weird thing is that the bytes does not come out at the outgoing and incoming icon. I am using sygate firewall-and there is nothing. THe icon does not pop up instantly-but after 2hours of using the pc. WHen I right click and left click-the only option is pause. When I pick pause-the icon is still there and the other option available is resume. Its this something that I can not get rid. I am using DSL connection and I don't think that any upload will take that long. Help

Go to control panel>system>automatic updates. Uncheck "Keep my computer up to date," or select the option, "notify me before downloading any updates."

Click "START"> "RUN" > "MSCONFIG" >click on the "startup" tab. select "unselect all." then restart your computer. see if this remedies the problem. If so, go back to msconfig and try to identify which program is being loaded at startup that is causing the problem, and keep it disabled. If that does not work, then consult one of the experts here like Cricket, GLC, or Reboot, or try getting technical support from Microsoft.

Turn off Sygate, get the updates, install them, then turn Sygate back on.
