Pissed How much memory can u use in Windows 98 se

I am having problems with my stuttering PC.
Thinking about it, this problem seems to have started since I installed 512mb(was originaly 256mb) of DDR RAM( I have tried different sticks but never any less than 256, which worked fine!).
I have recently herd that windows 98se has real problems with memory over a certain amount. Could this be what has been causing the problem?
Is the OS just not capable of running this amount of memory effectively?

It kind of depends on the system, but 512MB is about the limit unless you make changes to the vcache settings in system.ini.

Take a look at this MS Knowledge Base Article: 253912.

Nice link Cricket.

Note that this "problem" can affect Win 95 ~ ME. It's a hit and miss thing with memory over 512 MB. Some machines run OK with more memory, some run only with tweaks, and some give constant problems.

If you think you are having mem problems you can download and run a very good and free tester called DocMemory from www.simmtester.com .

Unless the memory sticks are the same part number and size, you could be having problems do to mismatching. Again, this is an "iffy" kind of thing. Some mismatched memory will run in some machines and not in others.

You might have to adjust your VCACHE settings to run 512MB. Here is a similar post where the member had originally 2 sticks of 512MB for a total of 1024MB. At one point he removed one of the sticks but the computer still was acting up. Just a thought. And yes running 512MB in 98 is just up in the air as some poeple never had problems and others had nightmares.
