Question StartUp Entries

OS is ME.

"Many" programs initiate entries in "StartUp" [Start, Run, Mdconfig, StartUp], and automatically check the box when they install.

I have a couple of programs I have uninstalled and later re-installed more than once. Each time the program creates an entry in StartUp, checkmarked. I have un-checked the boxes, yet there remains more than one line for the same program.

How do I delete the excess lines/entries for a particular program in Startup? Would the same procedure apply to Win98SE as well?

Thanks,

G.F.K.

as long as they are not checked, it isn't hurting anything, but here is where in the actual registry that those startup entries reside::

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and::

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

You can run regedit, and delete them directly from these places in the registry and they'll be gone for good, it's just safer using the msconfig utility, and if you want one back it's much easier to just recheck it, cause after you delete it from the registry and you want it back you have to remember it xactly how it was...

entries key returning in startup

firstly your registry suggestion worked well with the exception of one anti virus program, after removing an addtional entry from the path you provided, i continue to have two show up in my startup folder.

what would cause this second string to keep appearing in the registry after i deleted it.

delete the string
restart machine
check startup items and it two anti virus items are checked off.

machine has 256megs and I am running at 90% after startup, this should be much higher but I assuming that this antivirus software is taking some memory.

thanks

I had that happen too, and that was when I had MCafee which I deleted completely and that took care of it.. I never did figure out either how it kept coming back after I deleted it from that place in the registry where startup items are kept.. There is the startup under programs too, that is in a totally different place, and I know you may find some things in autoexec.bat, that pertain to virus scan..
