NTFS or FAT
On my new computer I'll be using Windows XP. I was just wondering, though, which file system would be better, NTFS or FAT, and why?

NTFS, more robust and secure.

NTFS unless you have a specific reason not to.

I can just do this when installing the OS; when I get to the screen that asks me which partition I want to install it on, I can just choose to format the partition to NTFS, right? Or is there a better way to do it?

Yup, just do it during the setup.

So, all I have to do in DOS is setup the partition, then when I go into the OS setup I can format there, right?
What is the point of formatting a new hard drive...is it just to be absolutely sure nothing is on it? |

But I am talking about setting up a partition. Can I setup a partition from the XP CD also?

I agree, NTFS would be my choice also. Just as Hal pointed out, nowadays the whole partitioning/formatting process can be done during the OS setup. HTH

To save your data/programs you can also convert an existing drive to NTFS like so:
To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt Open Command Prompt. In the command prompt window, type convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. Notes To open command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command. |

I read if your hard disk is smaller than 30gig then go with FAT32. Any drive larger go with NTFS

I have Win2K on my laptop with a 4 gig drive, and it's NTFS. It's a better file system, period. FAT32 corrupts too easily.
