Serious Problem w/System & XP
My brother is having some serious issues with XP Home. When it starts, he gets a Serious Error has occurred message, but the system will continue to load. Then, several times after that, it will restart itself and load Windows again with the same error message. This repeats itself over and over again. He already did a new install of XP with the same results (formatted drive and all).
He using XP Home, AMD 1700+, 768MB of RAM... this just started yesterday. Restore didn't work, format didn't work.... Basically to sum it up, gets a weird error everytime it starts up - then about 85% of the time, system will just restart and load Windows again repeating the process. All fans are working, etc. Hope you can help... I'm lost... |

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic utilities and test the hard drive out. It may have developed bad sectors.
It looks like he has several sticks of RAM too...try removing all but 1 and see how the system performs. Cricket

Cricket, he only has two sticks of RAM. One 512 and one 256... Even after a format, will bad sectors still be there?

Yes even if you format, there still can be bad sectors on the drive. If the drive still has a warrenty and their is bad sectors you can get a rma # from the hard drive manufacturer.

I doubt it's a hard drive problem.
I would bet it's flaky ram. Go get Docmem from www.simmtester.com and run it. Check that BIOS setup is NOT set to "high performance", unless you have the RAM to match the timing settings. |

as cricket was saying...one of the sticks of ram may be bad. so try booting with just one, then the other and see if the errors still occur.
