You may contact MS thru their product activation line and explain the situation to them. I had it happen to a client about 3 weeks ago.

Are you absolutely sure you typed the correct key?

It sounds stupid but the key printed on the cert of authenticity I had for W2000 was very small and I mistakenly typed B when it was supposed to be 8. C may look like G, 8 like B, etc.

He wouldn't have gotten windows to install if he hadn't typed in the correct key code, and one does not have to type it in to do windows updates. If that load is activated then there must be a glitch in ther somewhere, and I would call tham as suggested. Thats my only thing I wonder is about activation, cause I think you get 30 days to activate and if he did not actually activate then windows updates my fail till activation is complete.

You're right ktkendall, you can't update till you activate. At least I couldn't with my copy of XP home. Windows XP has been shipping with SP1 for awhile, but if his copy has been lying around wally world for a few months and he tried to download and install it, before activating it prolly won't work.

Microsoft had a lot of this type of problem with SP1 to the point that they actually provided a key changer for a while, that you changed the key with and then re-activated xp in order to install SP1.

Back to what morriswindgate had given me in the link above. Is there a site where i can download the key changer? I know a guy at my high school that talked about it appparently it's for real. So if any one knows where to get it please share. Oh how do you tell if you have a corporate edition of Windows XP Professional? I looked at the Product ID in the registry and this is what it gave me.
55274-640-0000356-23958 I couldnt belive it.

If I have an invalid key will that stop things from being installed on the OS? I really wished i could fix this. I'll tell you this too. It was a copy some one returned. So i bought it as a used buy. Apparently a bad idea... I figured hey.. An affordable copy of XP Pro. Who knew the thing was returned. So im out of Ideas people. And im not alowed to return a returned item.

I need a key changer or something to that effect. I think what happened was that someone made a Keygen and my number got generated.
