Having trouble installing on a Dell

My friend has an old Dell. A Dimenson XPS T something. Its got a p3, windows 98, 256mb ram, ati rage pro video card.
Now, he is trying to install NASCAR 2003, and is having some trouble with direct x. He's got version 9. After he gets done installing the game, and starts it, it asks him what he wants to use, Direct x or openGL. Direct x gives an error that it cannot get the display modes from the video card, and openGL just freezes when we try it, on any of the display modes.
We tryed d/ling new drivers for the video card, but wernt quite sure about which ones were right, so we did anyways and then it said that the old ones were better, so we stuck with those.
I dont know what to do. Would there be some windows update which would adress this? Or an all-in-one driver for ati cards?
Thanks

You probably downloaded the wrong drivers. from what I remember, I think there are two types of drivers for ATI. One for true ATI, meaning if the video card was made by ATI company itself. The other is for other ATI cards made by other manufacturers. I think Dell uses ATI cards made by other companies.

Try these drivers. They should be what you are looking for.

Well, it turns out he only has an 8mb video card and the game requires a 16 meg. Could this be the root of the problem?

Yes. Also check to see if his processor goes past the minium requirements; if it doesn't then I wouldn't even bother with the video card uprgrade, because the rest of the system would not be able to keep up.

I decide on doing an upgrade when my system barely meets or doesn't meet the minium requirements to play on new games.

He splurged just after i posted and we went and got a new video card. Picked up a cheap tnt2 agp at the local shop and plugged that sucker in, and the game ran beautifully. Thanks for all the help anyways guys.
