Well, I just recently had a shut down problem in win98 that included 3 invalid page fault messages on startup. So I deleted the fault message files and the win.ini file and then restored a fresh copy of wini.ini from the System File Checker. That fixed the shutdown problem as well as the startup fault messages but I don't know what kind of damage or information loss I might have done deleting the win.ini file.

Might make sure to scan for virus, spyware, trojan type activity. If you've added or removed any software or hardware just before the shutdown problems started, you can try a run of RegClean 4.1 (it was updated for Win98) to help clean up the Registry: http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list
If that does it, you're having a lucky day. If that doesn't change anything, off you go to the Windows Shutdown TroubleShooting page: http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm Best of luck . . . Gary |

thanks for all the replies
i ended up reinstalling win98 (laptop owner wanted it back) and its now sorted i have 1 question though, the original install was win98se (it had shutdown problem). i reinstalled win98se and still had the problem. i went through the shutdown troubleshooting guide that was posted and got nowhere. out of desperation, i installed my old win98 upgrade disc (clean install) and now the laptop shuts down fine. does anyone know why win98upgrade works when win98se dont? cheers in advance if anyone can help (laptops an NEC versa p133 if that helps) |

There are documented shutdown issues with 98SE on some machines - I have experienced this a few times myself.
There is a small update file buried on the Microsoft site which solves this in some cases, but it doesn't always work. all the best. |

This is a simple and more common than you might think problem. Your computer thinks that it is networked. This may be because of Ethernet or Wireless Networking software you may have installed on your computer. Anyway, the reason the shutdown process will not gain access any further than the splash screen is because it is waiting for other computers on the network to give it permission to shut down. Sometimes there is nothing to resolve this problem but there is something you can do in this case of events. On the shutdown menu, tell your computer to restart in MS-DOS mode. Once MS-DOS mode has been actuated, it is safe to turn of your computer.
