Deleted Win.ini and Restored It From System File Checker: Now Everything Works

I was trying to set up a network between two computers, win98 to win2000. Somehow I botched the network settings so bad on the win98 machine that my system would not shut down and on boot up I got the following three difference messages:
Brasil caused invalid page fault at Module Brasil.exe
Marcos caused invalid page fault at Module Marcos.exe
Systray caused invalid page fault at systray.exe

When I clicked on properties for these files, it gave the location for some or all of them, I don't remember exactly, in Win.ini. Since I thought I would have to reformat anyway , I decided to try one last thing. I got the idea to delete every reference to those files some of which came from the Win.ini file. Then I restored a fresh copy of Win.ini from the System File Checker. Now miraculously the computer shuts down properly and starts up with no invalid page fault errors.

I really don't understand what all these invalid page faults were and what win.ini does but now everything seems to work though I wonder what things I might have lost or damage I might have done by deleting win.ini. I didn't look at the win.ini file carefully and the only thing I remember about it is that I had some info on my Epson printer in there so maybe I might have to reinstall the print driver.

If anyone knows what I did and that everything will be OK, please let me know.

You are obviously not running a virus program. Or, the definitions are badly out of date.

These files are part of the Opaserv virus.

And, as a FYI, if you ever need to restore Win.ini or System.ini use Scanreg /Restore. By using SFC you now have the generic Windows one that is missing any changes that were made to yours since the original Windows install.
