I have a CTX 133 laptop that I had to wipe clean. After Win 98 loaded again, I still cannot change the video settings to other than 16 colors and 680 X 480. As the drivers I put: Monitor: Super VGA 1600 X 1200 and the Display is set at SuperVGA. However, when it restarts, it defaults again to 16 colors, 680 X 480!
Is there a driver that I can use for this? Any suggestions? Unfortunately (my mistake), I did not check the settings before I formatted the HD. I know that prior to reloading Windows, it worked just fine for the video settings mentioned above. If I left out any other needed info-just holler! Ken |

What you need is a video driver specific to your video card. You can download directly from Internet at the company's web site. If you don't remember what kind of video card you have, hopefully you can look up the invoice that you received with your computer. Usually your laptop came with a bundle of books and discs and there may be a a disc for your video card.

Well, if it has a NeoMagic video chip doing the work, you can try a driver from driversguide (might want to scan it with antivirus before unzipping it). http://www.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads5/1979.html
This is assuming you don't have the original driver disk that came with the notebook. Here's a procedure from the CTX website for installing the driver from their drivers CD. If you don't have that CD, just point to the driver downloaded from driversguide (after you've scanned it and unzipped it) - this would be in step #7 below: _________________________ "Windows 98 If Windows 98 is the Operating System you are using, please follow procedures below for driver installation." 1) Click on the Start button, placing the cursor on Settings and select Control Panel. In Control Panel window, double click on the Display icon. 2) In Display Properties window, click on Settings and click on the Advanced tab. 3) In Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) Properties window, click on Adapter and then click on Change. In Update Devices Driver window, click on Next to proceed the installation. Then choose "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver your want." and click on Next to continue. 4) In Update Device Driver Wizard window, click on the Have Disk tab. 5) In the Install From Disk window, click on the Browse tab. 6) Place the Utility CD in the CD-ROM Drive. 7) In the Open window, select D:\VGA\win95\nmgc.inf file and click OK. 8) Install From Disk window will restore, click OK to continue. 9) In Select Device window, you should see NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD in the Models display box. Click OK to proceed installation. Update Device Driver Wizard window will restore. First click Next and then click Finish. 10) In Standard PCI Graphics Adapter [VGA] Properties window, choose Apply. 11) In Display Properties window, choose Close. 12) The system then starts copying files. Wait until the system prompt you with "Do you want to restart your computer now?" Choose Yes. The system will restart to allow new settings taking effects. ___________________________ Best of luck . . . Gary p.s. ...if you have a Win98 2nd Ed. disk around, or a friend with one, you can also try pointing to the display drivers folder on it & see if there are NeoMagic drivers for your video chip on it. The 2nd Ed disk has a lot of drivers on it, you might get lucky & find one there. p.s. #2 . . . if you're not sure what video chip is in your notebook, you can download a system analysis program like SiSoft Sandra, which will identify it for you http://www.sisoftware.co.uk BelArc Advisor is another good choice. I don't have the original disks-I bought the computer second hand. (they don't have the original disks either).
I notice as well that the sound driver is not loading and every time that I restart the computer, it detects an unknown device. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction, Gary. I will try out those sites. I just downloaded everything that CTX had for drivers for my specific model. Ken |
