Hi AIXspecial,
Welcome to PC Mechanic !! ![]() Going from Win 98.1 to 98.2 is the same as any other Win upgrade. You can do a fresh install, but you will need the earlier version's CD, or just install on top of Win 98.1. As always, you should do a full backup before any installation attempts are made, like a Ghost image or similar. Also, if you have an older mobo, you should disable the mobo's BIOS virus protection as this gave Win 98.x trouble on installation. HTH TwoRails |

Boot from the Win98 CD with CD support. Change to your C:\WINDOWS directory and either rename WIN.COM or delete it. Switch to your CD drive and run the setup. When prompted for an installation directory, be sure to rename it back to C:\WINDOWS from the defaulted C:\WINDOWS.000. Failing to do so will result in a clean installation, not an upgrade. If you make that mistake, it is reversible.

I think you would be much better off if you were to do a nice, fresh, clean install instead of an upgrade.

Tworails, it is NOT the same as any other upgrade. As HAL has pointed out, you MUST rename win.com to get it to work.
When going from 98 to 98SE, an upgrade works as well as a fresh install, the differences are so minor. I would not recommend upgrading ANY other MS OS this way though. A fresh install is always better. |

I must be missing something.... I've done the Win 98.1 to Win 98.2 upgrade (not many times, about 1/2 doz.) and never had to do that. Win 98.2 recognized it was going up in revs, and the install went just like going from Win 95 to 98 for me. The only time I ever ran into trouble was forgetting to turn off the BIOS virus proctection.

2rails-
I think the difference that Hal9k and reboot are talking about is using a full version disk of win98SE to upgrade...perhaps what you are using is the 98FE to 98SE Upgrade disc?? |

Ya... sorry all !
I played with it this weekend while doing a build for a bud... The upgrade to Win 98 SE will install over Win 98 FE just fine. Of course the update will also, but the Full version does not... My bad... sorry.. (hanging head in shame...) ![]() TwoRails |
