How Do You Install Win2000 Pro To Drive E Using Dos
I would like to be able to install Windows 2000 pro with dos from a second hard drive I have for all my backups. I prefer that over having to use 4 floppy disks. And my CD rom does not have an auto boot as I'm still on a 266mhz. Using Dos, I have gone to the I386 directory in Win2000 pro and started up winnt.exe but the problem is that it automatically installs it on the C drive and I want to install it on the E Drive and keep my win98se on C. Is there any way to direct on what drive to install win2000 pro?

Hi,
Windows 2000 should prompt you during the setup asking you where you would like to install it. Do you get a screen at all that lists your partitions, and let's you choose where to install win2k? HTH Edit: Just thought of something else. You might consider using a windows 98 bootdisk and choosing the option for cdrom support, so could off the win2k cd. No, I don't get any prompt where to install it. It says something like Drive Wizard missing. I am assuming that it is not working the normal way because of the weird way I'm trying to install it through dos and the winnt.exe file in the I386 directory.

you cant install win2k from dos
like cobra said, if your cd is a full version, just boot from the CD, if the cd is not bootable, somewhere on the cd there will be a tools, or floppy boot folder with a program that will make a floppy boot disk you can use to boot from then install win2k and it's kind of like DOS, actually you will need 4 floppy disks if you do it that way. If all you have is the upgrade cd then you will not be able to do it. |

He said he cannot boot from a CD due to system limitations.
As said above, get a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) boot from that with the CD support option, then run Win 2000 setup from the CD-ROM. HTH, David. |

during setup you will need to pick clean install, not upgrade. Right after that there will be something that says 'I want to pick the partition where windows will be installed' or something to that effect. If you dont have the choice for upgrade or clean install then your cd is not the full version and you cant do it. You cant run the win2k setup program from a win98 dos disk, you can try but I'm sure that it will tell you 'this program cannot be run in dos mode'
