storing windows cab files locally

Hello there,

I know there is a way to get windows to automatically look in a local folder for the windows 98 cab files (so that it doesn't keep asking for the CD). I think it is a registry fix.

Can anyone help?

TIA.

Analog X has a nice little utility to do just that.

Hi,
Simply copy all the Win98 installer files to a folder on your hard disk. Then go to add/remove programs and add a windows component. When it asks for the CD, point it to the folder you stored all your .cab files in, and let it install.
From now on, it will always look in that folder by default.

You might want to edit the registry and make it point to whatever location you saved the cab files to. This was posted by Iman74 in a similar post like this one.

Here do this; this will save you a lot of trouble and you never need to go searching for the CD.
Steps:
1. Either you confirm that you have the CAB files already copied onto your PC; usually located in c:\windows\option\cabs or you can simply do this. Create a folder on the root of C: called Win98 (c:\win98).
2. On the cd copy all the files in cdrom:\win98 folder with the extension *.cab into the c:\win98 folder. This will take atleast a minute if not more.
3. Go to Start Run and type regedit
4. In regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SETUP
5. In the right hand side look for SourcePath.
6. Change that source to the location of your cabs. Whether it's c:\win98 or c:\windows\option\cabs ; you have to determine that.

If you did this all correctly whenever something is requiring win98 file (the cabs file) it will refer to the registry which will send it to the path specified and take the cab files that it needs.

Good Luck
