Unhappy CD Icon Help

Newbie here, so big HELLO! to everyone.

Heres whats up.

I recently built a PC for my girlfriend and installed XP Prof. During the install everything went fine and windows could see the DVD Rom and install from the cd.

Since install however the CD icon never appears in the "My Computer" window as a removable media and any programs that require a cd cannot find it.

Up until a couple of days ago this could be fixed by running the add new hardware wizard or by scanning for new hardware in the device manager. Two days ago the pc in question was linked to a house network using the XP network wizard on both pcs.

Now the cd icon never appears even doing the stuff I mentioned above
Anyone who can solve my CD Icon problem will have my eternal gratitude as my girlfriend is very vocal about the fact her computer isnt working

Thanx in advance

Does the CD Drive appear in the BIOS?

Have you made sure that if its on the same IDE cable as the hard disk that you dont have the CD drive jumper set as master?

How do you have the CD-Rom jumpered - Cable Select on an 80 wire cable - or Master or Slave on a 40 wire cable?

What motherboard channel is it on - Primary or Secondary?

Is it sharing with anything on the same cable?

If it is jumpered correctly and is detected by the BIOS properly, then have a look at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320553

You could try uninstalling the CD-Rom from Device Manager in Safe mode and then have Windows redetect it when it reboots.

While in Device Manager in Safe Mode, if you see multiple entries for the CD-Rom, then uninstall them all.

Did you change the boot sequence in the BIOS back to Hard Drive first, after installing XP from the CD-Rom?

Did you install programs onto the PC from the CD-Rom drive of another PC on the network?

HTH

Hi Guys

Thanx for the replies. I checked everything you mentioned and its all set up fine. The DVD appears in BIOS. The HDD is the primary boot drive. The DVD is master on the 2ndary ide and the hdd is master on the primary.

When you boot it in safe mode the dvd shows up perfectly normally its only in standard mode that its not there. I uninstalled the dvd in the safe mode device manager but then had to reinstall windows to get it back. The hardware wizard didnt see it anymore and windows didn't redetect it when it rebooted.

Sorry to go on but any ideas

Thanx
