Stumped... Networking problem in XP

Hello,

I've got a problem with a system running Windows XP pro and it not seeing the workgroup network I have setup. I checked all the settings (eg. workgroup name, IP address, Subnet mask, gateway, DNS and they are all correct) but we cannot see the other computers on the network.

Now one thing I have discovered is that the setting Client for microsoft networks is installed but unchecked. (I'm guessing this is why there is no access to the network) When I check it off and click on the ok button a message pops up saying that it will disable the client for microsoft networks. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but I get the same message repeatedly.

Has anyone come across this before and know of a solution?

I also thought of uninstalling the network card drivers itself but it won't give me that option in the device manager. The network card is built into the motherboard so I'm not sure if that is related to why the driver can't be uninstall.

Hi,

Just by chance, have you checked the CAT cable? It may be no good.

If you have a spare NIC around you could add that to your system and try the network from there.
