Windows ME/Laptop Help

I have a Toshiba 800mhz Laptop running Windows ME that I am having a problem with... The machine won't completely load the desktop...

It powers up fine. The Windows ME loading/splash screen appears, Then it gets to the point where all there is onscreen is the blue background, and a cursor, no desktop pattern, and no icons. It is at this point that the machine stops.

The machine doesn't freeze though, I can still move the mouse and such but it fails to continue to load the desktop. Anyone got any ideas on what could be causing this problem and how I could fix it?

Did you try pressing F8 right before windows starts to load and go into the safe mode. Sounds like driver problem are some kind of startup program that is hanging up the system. If safe mode works then once in there you should be able to fix problem...

If you have a bootable WinMe CD around, see if you can boot from that. Do you still have your Toshiba recovery disks if worse comes to worse? And some recent backups of your data?

If you can boot from the WinMe CD, you should be able to try System Restore from there.

Best of luck

How do I use system restore from the CD. I assume I just stick the CD in and turn the machine on and it will do it automatically, is this correct? Will I need to change the boot order in the BIOS?

Yes you may have to go into your BIOS and make sure cdrom is set in order ahead of your harddrive, then with bootable disk in it should detect that and let you boot from it...

Okay, I get that far. Then it gives me a bunch of choices:

-Start Windows Setup from CDROM
-Start Computer with CDROM Support
-Start Computer without CDROM Support

-Press F5 For SafeMode
-Shift+F5 for Command Prompt
-Shift+F8 for Step by step Confirmation

Which one do I take?

If you try the step by step confirmation you may get a clue as to what device or driver is causing the problems, but to fix the problem it sounds like you may need to do setup from cdrom. I have loaded Winme over top of an existing intall of WinME on mine and it preserves existing data and programs..
