task scheduler
Every now and then out of the clear blue, the task monitor appears in my systray at startup. I disable it in msconfig, and then days later it shows up again. I'm guessing that this might happen after I use MSWord. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Can you explain what you are calling Task Monitor?
The program TaskMon is generally called that, but it does not appear as an icon in the Systray area (nor does it appear in ctl-alt-del). |

It's been so long since I've turned mine off, but ,......
Try: double clicking on the tray icon > Advanced > Stop Using scheduler Then, unselect it in MsConfig. |

thanks galaxian,
unselecting in msconfig doesn't keep it from reoccurring... double clicking the icon in the systray just opens the window for the task configurations, right clicking it only gives an option to pause the scheduler.... I ran MSWord and rebooted to see if this was what was causing it to reappear....apparently I was wrong....there must be something else that brings it up sporadically... this doesn't happen on a regular basis...I can't figure out why or how it keeps coming back... |

Hmm - seems like galaxian's tactic of going to the Advanced menu should've worked: it shouldn't show up in msconfig after that.
You can try double-checking that you don't have a scheduled task still in there: Scheduled Tasks in Control Panel (this should open the same window you see right-clicking on the ScheduledTask icon in the SysTray). When you open the program, does it list any scheduled programs? You can try one more time going to the Advanced menu (all the way to the right-hand side), and selecting "Stop Using Scheduler" If a program is calling it up again, though, it will keep reappearing. I think you'll be OK, though, once you get all the way up to that Advanced menu. . . . Gary |

thanks Gary,
no scheduled tasks...and like I said, when I 2x click the tray icon there is only the option to pause the program...nothing to stop it...can't seem to find an advanced menu. I'll wait 'till it mysteriously appears again and note what programs I am using at that time. I never use the program, can I just uninstall it with out doing any harm? |

I don't think you can uninstall it, but you should be able to eventually find a "Stop using..." option. When you right click just once, the top option should say "Open". Choose that. The full program should open with the usual window & menus along the top. In Win95/98/98se the Advanced menu is to the far right at the top (File, Edit, View, . . . Advanced) [if my memory is OK today, that is - I don't have a Win98 machine handy --> it's all Win2000 here at work] Try looking in each menu along the top, maybe in your version it's a submenu somewhere (I'm not sure where it is in WinMe, for example)
Doing a repair install of IE restores the Task Scheduler, if you want to try that = then you'd do the "Stop using" from the Advanced menu after that. . . . Gary |

thanks again....I found the "stop using..... option" (I grew up in the 60's and have billions of dead brain cells)...maybe this setting will stick. If I find what program is activating it maybe I can find a setting within that program to stop this nonsence...
