Question Duplicate items in right click menu

When I right click on an icon on my desktop or my start menu I have duplicate items ...I have 2 Zip-It items and 2 Scan with Norton AntiVirus items.Anyone know how I can remove the duplicate items? It only applies to the desktop and start menu icons, not when I click on items in a folder elsewhere on my computer.

Someone else might have an exact answer for you - but I can give you a few things to look at in the meantime. Here's my reply to a post very similiar to yours here in the forum today:

. . . and . . . Welcome to the PC Mechanic forums

There are some shareware programs that offer to do this [I'd scan the downloads with antivirus if you decide to try them]. Usually there are Registry hacks that will work for this sort of thing, but I don't have my Win98 Registry book handy at the moment. If I find anything in there later on, I'll post it.

Here's a shareware context-menu webpage:

. . . and for the long-winded approach, there's always Microsoft's way of doing things: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...ntain/assoc.asp

Best of luck,
. . . Gary

Thanks everybody

Thanks everybody but I haven't been able to remove them yet. I'm not really comfortable playing with the registry and haven't been able to find a suitable program yet.I guess I'll just have to live with it. Just wanted to say thanks.....Thanks.

MS's Tweak UI will do it for you. It may be on your Win98 CD under Tools. Failing that, a Google search will find you a download site.

Hi Dan,

I don't have it installed anymore (I just played around with it for a while), but as far as I remember, you would click on the New tab and then be able to uncheck the listings you don't want.

It's not as clean as editing the Registry, because it doesn't actually remove the duplicates from the Registry - it merely disables them.

I mostly use pure Registry hacks now, if possible.

NoBones , here are some sites that may help you learn about the registry .

Always remember that , if things go wrong , you can always go back to a good copy of the registry .

This article describes how to restore a backup copy of the Windows 98
or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) registry
scanreg /restore

Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt in Windows XP (Q304449)
