I had posted this problem before and tried all the suggestions that were given. Last weekend it worked. I thought I had it. Well this week end it wont. I have gone into comand prompt typed in chkdsk /f hit y and enter. It said that it would check at the next boot. It didn,t. I,m going to try starting in the safe mode.If anyone has an idea I would love to hear it. Thank you.

For Win2000/XP, just use regular Windows Scandisk.

Try right clicking on drive, click properties, choose tools and click "Check Now" under error checking. If it is system drive it will schedule at next boot.

I have tried that and it never worked. I only got it to work one time by going to the comand prompt.

Well, I ended up being given the same message as you by windows, it was telling me to run chkdsk /f. The only way I managed to do was by booting to the installation CD, going through with it until it gave me the option to restore a previous installation, it brings you up a command prompt and you have to log in as admin to your installation. Once you are logged in you can run chkdsk /f from the command prompt. This was in Win XP btw. If you want an exact guidelines, let me know and I'll go write em.

Well, I had a little time free there so I went through the stages that allowed me to get to it. I am gonna take it for granted you got Windows XP.
1) Boot to windows installation CD 2) Press R at the menu to select Recovery Console 3) Select windows installation (only number required) 4) Type admin password 5) At the following command prompt, type: chkdsk /f This is the way I managed it but you aint using XP I don't know if it will work the same. |

OK, running chkdsk from the restore console worked for me, but let me know how you get on, because I couldn't even get to safe mode command prompt.

I plan to wait till this comming week end to try the safe mode. I wonder why things don't work like they are supposed to? I do appreciate your help.

What is the error that you are getting? Windows told me to run chkdsk /f because it was bringing up a BSOD anytime I tried to boot into XP, no matter whether it was safe mode or anything. It was caused by me trying to do a bit of moving around of my partitions on the hard drive and Windows didn't like what I was trying so it shut me down in the middle of it (I was using Partition Magic, GRRR). This left me with a pretty messed up partition but running chkdsk /f sorted me out.

I was under the impression that you were to run chkdsk from time to time. Kind of maintenance.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to run every now and again though, I just never really bother with that sort of thing because I like to reformat and reinstall every now and again to keep things running smoothly.

Don't bother running chkdsk manually on an XP system.
If Windows needs it, you'll be prompted. |
