XP locks up while installing
Initially XP pro was locking up on boot.
I have new IDE cables, and a new 40GB WD hard drive. I tried to reload the last working version of windows. I've tried repairing, and finally tried to reformat and reinstall. I keep locking up at the 35 to 38 minute mark. Does anyone have any idea what my problem is? I am completely stumped. ![]() system: A7V333 Asus motherboard with a 1300 Duron processor 640 MB RAM Gforce 4 video card on board sound Last edited by Sherman; 05-05-2003 at 09:13 AM. |

Go into BIOS setup.
Disable any anti-virus, aka "Trend ChipAway". Disable onboard sound, especially MPU-401 stuff (only needed for DOS sounds). Disable com 1 and 2 if you're not using them. Make sure that "PnP OS Installed" is set to NO. Grab a good bootdisk, and re-fdisk the drive, remove all partitions, restart, fdisk, partition (if needed) make the first one active. |

I seem to have spoken too soon. I got it installed ok, but when I rebooted it locked up tighter than Fort Knox. Sigh..... Anymore ideas? |

How are your CPU temps?
What is the brand name of your RAM? Are you receiving any type of error when you boot up? Are you able to POST ok? I would try booting up into the OS with only 1 stick of RAM. You could have a defective stick installed, which maybe causing the lockup. |

The RAM is Nanya (came out of a brand new Dell).
There is no error. It just locks up. When I go into Bios everything has detected correctly and the temps are fine. One stick or two sticks of RAM makes no difference. |

Don't use the RAM that came out of the DELL. You should purchase one stick of RAM(Brands like Crucial, Samsung) and give that a try.

I know I shouldn't, but the price was right.
The system was working fine until about 2 weeks ago (I got a good three months of hard use). I don't think it is the RAM. |

Have you done any system upgrades before this started happening?

Nope.
The only thing odd that happened was a power loss. But, I replaced the hard drive after the power loss and it is still doing it. Could the motherboard be causing my problems? It doesn't sound right, but what do I know? |

Power supply, motherboard, RAM, all suspect.

When I had that happen to me, it was the power supply.

I say it's the ram. Dell ram is made to Intel spec and you have a Via-based board. There IS a difference in ram and XP can be pretty fussy.
