Why would you want to go back to windows 98? You can go to add remove programs and choose windows xp uninstall i think.

Do you mean you want to start over clean and just install Win98 on your system?

Boot up into FDISK and remove the NON DOS partition, and boot up into 98S setup. 98 Setup will repartition the hard drive and format it and then it will install the OS.

Have you saved all your drivers, made boot floppy etc. ? Go to bootdisk.com and read tutorials on uninstall Windows.

insert the boot disk - fdisk - and delete all partions and logical drives if you have any.
then create primary partion and set it to active. then format. |

If you copy the install files to a directory like c:\win98 after you reformat, it will be quicker.

Go here and get Delpart, it'll remove any partition on your hard drive. Then go here for instructions on fdisking and formatting a hard drive.
To install Win98SE from the hard drive instead of the CD, do the following: After you format the hard drive, switch to the c: prompt and type "md win98" (without the quotes) and hit enter, then type "cd win98" and hit enter. Put the Win98 CD in the CD-ROM drive and then from the c:\ win98 prompt type copy X:/win98/*.* and hit enter (substitute your actual CD drive letter for X) and the necessary files will be copied to your hard drive. Once that's done, from within the c:\ win98 directory type "setup" and hit enter. The Win98SE installation process will begin. Cricket

Guys that fdisk/format site that everyone is recommending:
http://www.muisejt.com/fdisk/fdisk.html IMHO is not good- very cool looking yes, but leaves out a lot. Why create one or more than one primary ? What size to make partitions? Create extended partition-yes or No ? Size of logical drive ? Why ? These and many, many questions are unanswered. Here is one thats not perfect but better, much more complete, and detailed, although it looks dated. http://www.bootdisk.com/txtfiles/hdd.txt Someone could be a HERO on this board if they pulled these 2 and others together along with archives from this forum and made a really good tutorial on Fdisk/format/install OS especially including drives with existing data/files/OS and not just for installs of new HDDs. The reason I like sending people to the FDISK & FORMAT site is because it has those illustrations that make following the instructions a little easier for a new user who just wants to know the basics on how to set up a hard drive for Win9x.
Some of your questions can't be answered by that site because it's up to the user to decide out how many logical partitions he wants and how large he wants them. You can only have 1 primary partition on a hard drive and if you want more than 1 partition you have to make an extended partition to create the logical partitions within. Of course, with WinXP fast becoming the OS of choice, fdisk and format is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Cricket
