When i try to install Windows ME on my Compaq Armada 1571DM laptop, it will go throught the whole setup process and right before it starts to load windows it says updating system files please wait...and then says that its complete but just hangs there? and does it everytime i try to go into windows. if it helps...here are the specs for the laptop:
Armada 1571DM 200mhz Pentium CPU 32mb sdram 24x cd 2mb chips and technologies integrated video 3.2gig hard drive i dont know what to do from here. i was thinking that maybe it was a problem with the video driver? do you think that i would have to install the video driver before i install windows? or something like that? |

What OS came on the laptop - Win95, 98, or Me?
How are you trying to install Me - using FDISK and a Me CD or using a Compaq Quick Restore or Recovery CD. Are you trying an "upgrade" install of Me (over the top of 95/98) or a clean install (you have formatted C: )? |

By looking at your PC specs I believe your problem is that the PC just can't handle/meet the requirements for ME. Did you confim you meet all it's requirements?

Iman74,
According to these specs for WinME, my laptop should be able to handle it without a problem: System Requirements for Windows Me The basic System Requirements for Windows Me are: 28.8 Kbs modem or faster with current Internet connection CD-ROM drive Sound card Speakers or headphones Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device VGA or higher resolution monitor Pentium 150MHz processor or better 32MB of RAM or better Minimum 320MB free hard-disk space |

Kory-
While at first glance you might seem to have met the ram requirement, the one thing to consider is your integrated video. Most of the time the video memory is shared when it is onboard. This would drop your sdram to 30 mb...just below the requirement for your upgrade. While upgrading the cpu is a good idea, I would try starting with more memory first to see if you can install your new os..... Last edited by Dan; 05-06-2003 at 12:44 PM. |

When it comes to laptops you can only upgrade two things:
1. Memory & 2. HDD But there are exceptions; for instance we deployed a number of laptops. About two years later we changed out all their cd-roms for burners. But you get the basic idea. |

Like andyms18a, I'd recommend returning to Windows 98. On the hp/Compaq website for your model, they list drivers for many versions of Windows for your model: but not for WinME. The specs of your notebook seem like a fairly good match for Win98, since with System Restore running, you'd get into space problems soon enough on your 3.2gb hard drive. And with no specifically WinME/Compaq versions of drivers for that proprietary hardware, you're going to have a lot of trial-and-error driver work to do to get WinME running smoothly. And yes, it really does need a bit more than 32mb to perform acceptably - though that probably isn't what's causing the system hang during setup.
If you don't have your Compaq disks around, you can download just about all you need from http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi.../4_898.html#30 When you used fdisk, did you leave the non-Dos Compaq partition alone? On many models (not sure if on all), Compaq stores bios information on the hard drive in a proprietary format. If you've deleted that with fdisk, you can still restore it with either your Compaq Recovery disk set, or with downloads from the link I posted above. Best of luck . . . Gary |
