Have you tried making sure all not needed applications are closed down first, then try shutting down. Was this always a problem since it was new, or did it recently become a problem?? It probably isn't hardware, most likely is a software problem, cause if you had real hardware problems then you would have problems when the computer is running too.. Most of the time the shutdown thing is too many things running in the backround and windows gets stuck trying to shut them down, although XP is much better that older windows versions.. Boot into safe mode and let it run for a little while then shutdown and see if it's any different.. If so then for sure it's a software problem but if shutdown still hangs just as long in safe mode then could be hardware.. could be hardware driver though...

Did you try th safe mode thing, since you say it's anew build and a problem from the start that sounds driver or hardware related... 1 thing to try would be to remove everything except harddrive, vid card, processor and memory, and disable , USB, comm ports, lan(if onboard) or remove if PCI card, remove or disable sound. get it basically down to just bare minumum to boot windows and see if problem persists, chances are it will clear, then add one device at a time and you'll eventually find the faulty one. If problem persists with bare minimum hardware components then only things left te be faulty are harddrive, RAM or motherboard....

Actually this is the recommended way to build the machine. Load only the essentials to get windows up and runnin, then add devices one at a time, so that if one is a problem you'll catch it as you build.. I doubt that most do that though cause of the time factor, someone like me that just gets to build an occasional PC does cause it's worth it to take a little more time building it instead of a lot of time troubleshooting it...

So if I understand U correctly now, it did seem to be the USB modem, but now even with it removed the hanging problem won't go away???

There must be something left of that modem like the drivers or something, but it seems you have pinpointed the troubling device. I would think with a USB device U should do the removing with the device present to make sure everything is removed.. I could be wrong on that and it may be just the opposite, perhaps someone else will read and confirm...

I would suspect it's USB 2.0 drivers.
Have you been here: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/...B/default.mspx |
