Question dual boot issues

alright my friend has a dell computer, and after installing a printer driver that was incorrect, he crashed the computer. somehow, after spending time on the phone w/ dell, he managed to get two windows folders, and when he booted his computer, he got a message asking which xp to boot into. after choosing the correct one, we were able to send all of his files to my computer via the network, and we just formatted his computer. before doing this there were two boot options. now, after reinstalling windows xp, there are three xp listings in the boot menu. am i correct in assuming that dual boot info is not stored on the hard drive, or did the hd not format correctly. how can i correct this? the other two xp choices are defunct, and do not lead anywhere. thanks in advance for the help.

Just edit boot.ini and set the default to the correct one, and remove the other two items.
If C is the boot drive, then the boot.ini would look exactly like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Boot.ini is a hidden system file - trust me, it's there in the root of C.

I'd reinstall XP again, this time deleting all partitions and recreating them during setup.
