I am running Windows XP Professional and I have just a small question for some one who knows what they are doing.. I want to get rid of Windows Messenger... There is no uninstall for it in the folder in which all the program files are stored for it. And it cannot be pulled from the system though add/remove programs.. So im out of options. Anyone know how to junk this program? I want to pull its strings in the registry as well. I want it gone!

The link Pam123 posted was enough to get rid of this annoyying thing once and for all. Is it ok for me to just pull the file folder now? I mean can i delete it since its not running and its disabled or should i just leave it..?

Leave it for now.
I've never been able to explain it, but the week after you axe a Windows' folder something turns up that would be so simple to fix if only you still had it. Unless you need the drive space let it alone. |

Thanks Pam, actually you can now attempt to remove the folder.
Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. Go figure. If the services are disabled, and it's uninstalled, it usually will go. If you want it back at a later date, it will show up in the add/remove windows components. |

after installing SP 1 aren't you supposed to be able to uninstall messenger and IE? I thought I read that somewhere.

You can also do a google search for XP Anti-Spy which will allow you, not only to get rid of Messenger, but also turn-off a bunch of the garbage services that XP runs.

If you want to uninstall it completely, open Notepad, set it to look for "All files", browse to c:\windows\inf and open "sysoc.inf".
Find the line that looks like this: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 Remove the word hide, so it looks like this: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7 Save and exit. Messenger will now be in the add/remove Windows Components list, and you can uninstall it. |

I use XP-Antispy too, works real good and it is a real simple program, and it does a few other things that should be done to XP too.
