I need to restore my registry to yesterday on one of my WIN 98SE machines and it's not working out correctly.
At the "c" prompt, I type "scanreg/restore" as I've done on other machines but I don't get correct dates. Here's the choices I get: 06/16/11 Started rb005.cab 06/15/11 Started rb004.cab 06/14/11 Started rb003.cab 06/13/11 Started rb002.cab All of these choices are from about 3 years ago! I've got scan registry enabled in msconfig too. What do I do?? Help!

Is your date/time set correctly?
As a test do Start > Run > Scanreg Take a backup and then check what the dates are. The files should indicate "Not Started". |

It may simply be a case of windows date different than the system date.
Windows may report it correctly, but BIOS does not. Check in BIOS to see what it REALLY is, and then you'll be able to do a bit of simple math to see which backup you want to restore. Scanreg get's it's dates from the BIOS, not windows. There's no way you'd have a 3 year old backup still active, unless you turned off scanreg 3 years ago, and haven't reformatted since. |

Jim this is wierd; the bios time and date is right on. I verified that Scanreg is checked "on" in msconfig.

Rename all of the CAB files in Sysbckup and then reboot. (change the extension from CAB to OLD)
Then check in that folder again. If Scanreg is running correctly, it will create a new Registry backup. |

Something is screwy.
Those files are dated either 2011, or 2006, and either June or November. Restore one, and see what happens? If you have the file in the root of C: called system.1st you can rename it to system.dat and (in DOS) replace system.dat in the c:\windows folder. That will reset all the hardware in the system to the first boot after you installed Windows. How far back was that? |

You only want to do that as a last resort, since you will then have to reinstall ALL of your applications.

Space/Time anomaly?
[well, maybe on Star Trek Next Generation . . . ] Seems like I'd also run a thorough virus check when something this strange is going on. Ron, when you checked your Bios dates, did they match what Windows shows in the Control Panel? Can't wait for the next exciting episode. DeathStar? WindowsTriumphant? Mysteries Rampant? . . . Gary

This is wierd: I'm still getting this type of format in scanreg/restore:
06/16/11 Started rb005.cab The bios clock is right and the Win clock is right. Does Win98SE store registries from say, 10 days ago? If so how would I load it? Jim, I loaded this version of Win98SE about 3yrs ago. |

Hi again
Looks like there's a file that stores the regional time settings that can become corrupted. Can't hurt to try the quick little procedure that's in this Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;192317 As far as how many copies of the Registry Windows 98 2nd Ed. saves, I believe there's a value in the Registry that controls that. Seems like four or five is the usual, but you can change the value to a greater number. If I come across that, I'll post the Registry key a little later on. . . . Gary [p.s. ...found another couple of articles, one of which lists that Registry value for the number of Registry backup copies: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;182841 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;184043 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;198864 Last edited by GaryRouth; 05-17-2003 at 05:34 PM. |
