Win98 will not load.

Hi everyone.

Like my subject says I am having trouble getting win 98 to start. When I turn on my computer today I got a “invalid system disk error Replace and strike any key when ready” error and there
was no disk in the drive. After trying a few different things on this forum I found and try this:

“Using a boot disK....make sure your system files are OK by typing SYS C: at the A:> prompt. This will tranfers a copy of the system files needed to load Windows.

Then restore the Master Boot Record by typing FDISK /MBR at the A:> prompt”

Now the “invalid system disk error..” is gone but windows will not load. Right now I am stuck at c:/ prompt and cant get into windows.

I tryed going into safe mode but I got a message saying "windows is bypassing your startup files" and went to the c prompt again.

So does anyone here know how to get windows to run from the c:/ prompt. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hi Iman74,

I tried what you said and when I type win in I got:

"HIMEM.SYS is missing
make sure that the file is in your windows directory."

I don't know if a repair install would solve this. If so would I lose any files on my computer? Thanks again.

A repair will work nicely. You won't lose ANYTHING.
Rename win.com to win.bak (located in the c:\windows folder)
Run setup.
When prompted for the install folder, it will say "Windows.000", select other, and change it to c:\windows

. . . and, just in case you're not sure of the command syntax, it looks like this from the A: prompt

cd \Windows
rename win.com win.bak

_______
reboot - I think the L.A. version of Abort, Retry,... would be Abort, Retry, apple slices/Chardonnay/leftover pizza (who has time to go anywhere here?)
