I have tried Norton Ghost 2001 and it would not let me do it, I recently got NG 2002 with a new motherboard but don't have a spare HD now to try it on since I used that for new PC. The best I could figure from checking symantec suport site is that I did need to upgrade to NG 2002, but I can't tell you for sure that it will work...

I have been able to use drive image to clone an image with xp. I have never had good luck with ghost. The times it has restored an image, the machine was very unstable.

I've used Ghost with W98 and ME and it worked great, had to use it to restore system from several times due to kids who never know what they did, and it worked fine, but couldn't even get it to read my HD with XP on it. I would like to try the 2002 version but just don't have a big enough spare workin HD at this time...

I used GHOST 6.0 to clone my drive and it went over no problem.

I used Norton Ghost 2003. I just left it overnight and the drive was copied over in the morning.

Yea I think my older 2001 version is not capable of cloning Xp for some unknown reason, but I was really curious why, what is different about xp's ntfs???
I searched to error message I was getting with symantec support and pretty much concluded that I need a newer version of Ghost...

Ya Im seeing that too....more problematic copying an ntfs partition over as opposed to a fat 32...

Only version 2003 supports NTFS partitions.... Earlier version do not. I have cloned with Norton 2003 with no problems...

I used ghost 2001; it cloned xp fine. It is just after restoring the image the machine was unstable. I have never had a problem with drive image. Perhaps it was just my machine it did not like.

Can anyone give me step by step instruction on how to use ghost 2003 to copy my XP from one hard drive to another (on the same computer) When I tried doing it I somehow deleted my operating system..not once but twice in 2 days. I am a little sceptical now to say the least. Thanks

Check out the Radified guide to using Ghost for good instructions. It looks like there is additional info there for Windows XP too on page 8.

But did it restore it as ntfs or did it restore it as fat32?

I know my NG2001 version knows what NTFS is but for some reason it just didn't like my winXP load, maybe cause I have 64k cluster size.....

NTFS.... I had quite a job actually.... I was replacing 2x 20Gb IDE and 1x 18Gb SCSI with a single 120Gb IDE..... I pre-partitioned the drive the way I wanted to, then cloned the C to the first partition on the 120, then the second partiton on the first drive to the second partition on the 120. When I was done, I removed the 20 and installed the 120 in its place. Everything booted normally. I then just copy/pasted the remaining drive letters. The entire system was NTFS.
