I recently committed a huge sum of cash to buying Office XP for my two computers. It installed okay on both systems, but I now need to activate it on both systems within 45 days. I know that you're not supposed to install it on more than one computer, so I'm wondering if I can activate it on both computers. I know the software will install fine, but I need to know if Microsoft will find out and if they do, will they care?
PS: Please respond before my 45 days are up.

If one is a desktop and one is a "portable" (arent they all?) then the EULA allows the double installation.

Right... if they are both desktops, you cannot install on two machines. If one is a desktop and the other a portable, you activate on the desktop which will go fine. Then you attempt to activate on the portable but of course will receive an error that this copy is already activated. From there, you contact Microsoft and explain the situation and they will provide you with an activation for the portable.
NOTE: it's easy to see that this convo may lead into a "they will never know the difference that it isn't a portable".... so lets just not go there.

Perhaps the safest way is to obain a license for two machines. Aalthough i don't think you want to spend any more money...

How does Microsoft know it's been activated?

It sends a hardware identifier code to MS, if the HWID matches that of another on record it assumes it has already been activated. Some false positives are inevitable, but all in all it works as advertised.

It is my understanding that while you can install Windows XP on only one computer, MS allows Office XP to be installed on two computers.

Q. Can I install my copy of Office XP on my home computer and my laptop? A. Yes. According to the End User License for Microsoft Software, you can install and use your retail copy of Office XP on a single desktop computer and on your laptop, for your exclusive use. However, this does not apply to Office XP product licenses acquired with the purchase of a computer. These original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be transferred to another desktop computer or laptop. To learn more about activation policies, visit the Microsoft Product Activation page. |

I'm happy this was brought up! I just bought a copy of XP for my home computer, and put my old Office '97 on my laptop because I thought it woud be illegal. After seeing this post I looked it up on Microsofts site. This is great.

I've got frontpage 2002 and office 2002 and installed it on my desktop and laptop worked out just fine!
And to beat all in all the time I've had my systems I had to reinstall XP on my desktop (unrelated problem) and I reinstalled the two programs and it still workd out fine |

yea you can install that ONE copy on the same hardware infinty times however you cannot uninstall on one machine then move it to another. The program that verifies this is Services Win32 and it uses a lot of ports.
