Windows Server 2003
I just recieved the evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003, is this just dedicated server software or can you use it as a operation system just like win 2000? What can or cant you do if you run this as an daily use os?

2003 can be used as an operating system because that is what it is but it is designed with being a server in mind so it has more features for this. The thing I was kinda impressed with was the attention to security as opose to features this time around. Of course Im sure it still wont hold a candle in the wind to Linux but Microsoft says (and Microsoft often lies) it surpasses linux in security. but back to your question 2003 is just the next evolution of 2000. One thing I found that was hard to do with this OS was it does not like to run games. Not being a real avid game player myself I dont really care I have other machines for that when Im in the mood. another thing I found it didnt want to do was give you much of a choice of resolution settings (and this was also most likley the reason it wouldnt play games) you could either choose 640 x 480 or another very high resolution setting which escapes me for the moment. So it was either low or really high resolution No in between. (when I talk about games Im refering to games like hitman or Doom. It played the Sims just fine and I know call me a wuss but I like the Sims) I hope that helped

What version did you get? The one that is for 180 days or the RC2 that runs for 360 days?

Dunno, I got it in my M$ Action Pack and the 180 days version they gave it to me when I attended the presentation of the OS. If it's the final version then it's the 180 days one.

There is a hidden performance boost for drives in s2k3, in the drive properties section. It is in the hardware area. Supposedly gives a good boost. The caveat is that you should always run a ups when this is enabled, or you may lose data if power drops before caching has ocurred.

Nforce mobos may be out too. I can't get mobo drivers to load on s2k3, says the os is unknown.
