cleaning Registry
is there a way to clean it.
My Remove Programs list has programs that have been gone but not uninstalled. Is there a way to clean that out for porgrams that are actually still on my PC?

I would highly suggest jv16PowerTools, it simply has the most powerful registry cleaner around, not to mention a lot of other very useful tools
http://www.jv16.org (there is another utility called Regcleaner on his site, but DO NOT get it. It is inferior to the registry cleaner in powerTools and he has stopped developing it anyway. Just get PowerTools )

I've used RegClean for several years with no problems. These are all good programs. Try them yourself and make your own decision.

I like to use RegHealer. Use it regularly on my machine and have found no problems. Was using the registry repair program that came with Norton System works, but it didn't do anywhere near as thorough a job as reghealer. The free version is only a teaser and it is limited in the number of errors it can fix. I paid the $20 for the full version. You can download it at CNET.com or PCWorld.com

RegScrubXP is my tool of choice.
jv16 just leaves too much room for error (if you don't know what you're doing), and you can actually remove some necessary stuff, and leave a non-bootable system. WinDoctor is WinCrasher. Never, no way, is that getting near any of my systems. Back to the original question, you'll have to edit the registry to remove the entries permanently, or use TweakUI to do it. Manually, the unchecked items are stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg |
