While this may be possible, it is not legal, windows 3.1 has not been abandoned by MS so you must buy yourself a copy.

Check out ebay. You probably can't buy a new copy of it, and if you can it would be too expensive, but you probably can find a cheap used package either at local computer shops or garage sales but ebay is probably your best bet. Your correct in that it can be found online for free, and although it is ancient it still is illegal to obtain it without paying.
Why on earth would you want to get windows 3.1 anyways? |

Moderators Comment.
To the best of my knowledge... MS has not abanonded Win3.1 at this time so if you find a "free" download, consider it illegal and unsupported in these forums.

I don't know the exact difference but you will probably want to get windows 3.11 Windows for Workgroups rather than just 3.1

link removed
Moderator's Comment As stated above, we have no indication that Win 3.1 is abandonware, so until such proof is given, we have to assume that any direct link to a download would be considered warez which definitely are not allowed on these message boards Last edited by HAL9000; 05-20-2003 at 09:00 AM. |

I actually found a Windows 3.0 once at a flea market, for just a couple of bucks. It was still in the plastic shrinkwrap. With 5.25 floppy's and 2 inch thick manual. I ended up selling it on ebay.It had had been made for a Wang computer.

Was just out our Universities surplus sale because they were getting rid of all there Pentium II 400's. I was talking to the guy and he said they were allowed to keep the existing Windows 95 OS on there as it was okay by MS. They used to always have to wipe the drives clean before they sold them in the past.
So I dont see why it would be illegal to post a link to download Windows 3.1. And as far as I can remember last school year, one of my instructors said there was a non-profit group in town looking for a cheap network solution so they loaded Windows 3.1 on there computers because MS did not require them to license it. They were just using them as thin clients because all there apps ran on there server. |

OK I'll try to answer you here..
"Was just out our Universities surplus sale because they were getting rid of all there Pentium II 400's. I was talking to the guy and he said they were allowed to keep the existing Windows 95 OS on there as it was okay by MS. They used to always have to wipe the drives clean before they sold them in the past. " As long as the license is sold with the computer this is ok; assuming that the original agreement says so. Schools are often given mutiple copies of something in hopes that since the school is using it the students will buy it thermselves. (MS and Apple did this). Originally the Win 95 probably had a non tansferrence clause. I must assume that MS is waiving that in this case and as the owner of the software (yes -owner - you and indeed no one owns any MS software - just a license to use it) they are within their rights to enforce or modify and agreement in this manner. "So I dont see why it would be illegal to post a link to download Windows 3.1. " Well, ok; while it may not 'illegal' to post a link to a site that is doing something illegal on the internet on your web site, the FAQ for this site state that this forum does not support illegal activities. "And as far as I can remember last school year, one of my instructors said there was a non-profit group in town looking for a cheap network solution so they loaded Windows 3.1 on there computers because MS did not require them to license it. They were just using them as thin clients because all there apps ran on there server." You memory and lack of detail make this difficult to rebute, but it sounds like a group needed a way to get a hold of something for free and was able to get this copy of Windows. I am sure if I posted a web site that had a downloadable version of say Win XP I would be knocked off the web pretty quick, that MS is not looking so activley for violations with 3.1 is not the same as it being abandoned. This is the same argument as "there are no poilce enforcing the speed limit on this stretch of road so I can speed" |
