Appreciate some assistance.
Friend has PC (Dell) with W98 first edition. Is it possible to install W98 second edition (full version) over W98 first edition without losing whatever programs were installed? If so, how? Thanks for your help. |

Yes... boot from the Win98 CD with CD support. Go to the Windows directory and either rename or delete WIN.COM. Run the setup from the CD. When prompted for an installation directory, remember to rename it back to C:\WINDOWS from C:\WINDOWS.000 or else it will be a clean install (this is reversible if you forget). It will be upgraded leaving everything intact. This works for all WIN9X to WIN9X upgrades.

Actually it probably is still available if U havn't bought the software yet to do the upgrade. I got my SE upgrade disk right from Microsoft for 20 bucks plus shipping and it will just update the PC with the SE enhancments, like Windows drivers and such...

I'll argue that about WinME.... I've had it on one of my home machines since about a month before it's offical release (I actually bought the first copy from my supplier).... it runs 24/7 without a hitch.

although i hear that win98se is better for gaming, i really like the added features in me, so i'm willing to compromise. |

Me seems to produce either a 'love it' or 'hate it' response. Did find a full version still sitting on one of Circuit City's shelves, if that is a sign of anything.
It is the OS the owners want, so, so be it. Just hoping it installs (clean) on their PC without any problems. |

Frick... my install of ME is a "dirty" installation. That machine originally had Win95, then 98 on top, 98SE on top, then ME on top, not to mention numerous hardware upgrades throughout that time period... it's not even close to being the original machine.... hmmm.... the floppy is original I think....oh.. and the 33.6 modem.
