IE error "report"

occaisionally, when using IE6, I get an error "report" window that gives me the option to report an error on a page, and restart IE. This didn't happen when I was running v.5.
Is there a way to shut this action off?

sorry about that Dan this should be better

To disable Internet Explorer Error Reporting, use the following steps:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
In the list of installed programs, click Internet Explorer Error Reporting, and then click Add/Remove (in Windows 98, Windows Me, or Windows NT 4.0) or Remove (in Windows 2000).
Click OK

Zaney should have you covered, but if it's the other type of IE error...
If it's not in installed programs, open IE, select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced.
Put a tick mark in "Disable script debugging".
Take the tick mark OUT of "Display a notification about every script error".

thanks Jim and Zaney,
IE error reporting wasn't listed in add/remove programs...
and the tick wasn't there in the box for "display a notification...."
The message that I get gives me an option to "send a report to M$" or not to send. Either way, it closes the browser and then reopens it to my homepage....a real pain in the butt....

ya, thanks.
I saw how to do it at the M$ site...I don't have any reserve about editting my registry, but the tweak is just to change what program handles the error report. It sounds like the browser will still crash, just a different program ends up reporting.
I don't remember this sort of thing happening before I updated to v.6. (my memory being the way it is, this doesn't mean it didn't happen)....

Have you tried the IE6 Service Pack? It might help if the browser is having trouble. But it's just as likely the webpages "fault". You'd need to disable Automatic Error Reporting again, though, if you download the Service Pack, as I think it's active by default. I hadn't heard of IE needing to reboot itself just because of an error on a webpage. What should happen on badly scripted pages is that the page will display as well as it can, and if you have the status bar showing along the bottow of your screen you'll see a message such as "Done, but with errors on the page" - and you can keep on browsing.

thanks Gary, I do believe that you hit the nail on the head:
it IS basically is the webpages' fault. The attached picture is the error window I get, then the browser "reboots" to my home page. Is the service pack you speak of the same as the upgrade to v.6? It was after I installed it that I started getting this nonsense......
I just want to turn it off and have the errors dealt with the way that you describe.....the page displayed as best it can be and continue to be able to browse...

OH! THAT error reporting...
Just turn it off.
Go to Start > Run > and type in: services.msc
Find Error Reporting Service, and right click it, select properties, disable, stop.

Edit: Isn't this the Win9x forum?

Yesh...XP Home, not Pro...lemme think...
Can you go to Admin tools, services, and access it from there?
Or Admin tools, Component services, Services(local)?

Now I'm lost.
You have MS error reporting on a Windows 98 box?
That's news to me. Was it some kind of windows update, or how did it get on your system?
Anyhow, it's a service, and it must be starting with Windows somehow.
See if you can turn it off in msconfig.
If not, look in win.ini for any lines that start with "run="

(Moving this back to the 98 forum)

Jim,
I don't have a clue why this is a mystery. I simply downloaded and installed IE6 and this error reporting (like the window in the .gif I posted) started.
Nothing in msconfig...
nothing in in win.ini under "run" that refers to any services.
thanks for moving this back....

Have you got content advisor or something else that has anything to do with sending reports to ms?
It's got to be somewhere in one of the updates.
Look in the add/remove list, and then compare what you have with what article they are linked to, and see if it's there.
I'll bet with a little digging, you can uninstall it.

Seems like Zaney's DrWatson edit should work -

I believe the whole error reporting thing comes with IE6, no matter what version, and has to be disabled manually. But I'm not really sure (I've been lucky with IE in it's many variations I guess, so I don't pay much attention to it)

If the IE6 download was a recent one, it should have included the Service Pack, unless you selected an older version from a list. If you look in the Help menu & click on that "About Internet Explorer" tab, it should list your version, as well as any Service Packs (the 1st one gets abbreviated "SP1"), and any security updates.

Let us know if that Registry edit fixes the symptoms you're getting. (then we can recommend it to anyone else with the same fun happening)

Thanks for staying with me on this guys....
but if you read the article that Zaney linked to (thanks Z-)
you will find that the fix doesn't disable the error reporting, it just deligates it to a different handler. It sounds like the browser will still crash (something it didn't do before the update to IE6)
I checked and I do have SP1 installed...
It looks like there may be no cure for the crashing....
I wish I could get things back to when the page would just form with errors on it, and no crashing...this is what is the most bothersome part. I don't really care about the error report, I'm just tired of the crashing.

Dan - I'd still try the Registry edit. As long as you don't set it up to go to a different "internal server", that edit should disable to error reporting enough to just display the "Done, with errors on page" sort of thing with the "default error handler".

Besides, what would we do if we couldn't spiff up the Registry all day long?
. . . Gary

[and of course you do have the option of returning to IE 5.5]

thanks Gary, I'll give it a go and post back.
and ya, all I live for is to mess with the registry!
one question tho:
the new key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\IEWatsonEnabled = (DWORD) 0
when I enter the value, do I enter just 0, or do I enter (DWORD) 0 ??

I don't have a Win98 system handy, but I think just the zero might be OK. It's been a while since I've had to create a key (I'm usually modifying or deleting), but I think when you are in regedit at the spot you create the key, you'll have to choose what sort of value you wish to create = it's then that you'll choose DWORD from the three or four choices offered. If given the choice between hexidecimal and decimal, I'd try hexidecimal first, and enter just the zero in the value box, since I believe regedit will create the zero value in hex with the decimal value displayed in parenthesis after it [Like this: 0x00000000 (0) ]

If I'm not remembering enough details, let me know.

Thanks much Gary.
The editting has apparently worked. I tried visiting sites that have crashed before with the error report thing, and just get the "done with errors on page" in the left lower corner of the browser.
Glad I didn't have to think about reverting to 5.5.
....and off we ride into the sunset........
