Service Pack 1
On XP do you have to download and install service pack 1? I haven't had any problems with XP so does it matter if it has service pack 1?

The SP fixes lots of security holes so I would download it and install it if I were you.
However, make sure you make a restore point before installing it, this way you can go back if the SP screws up something.

I do like several recent posts lately though about certain Microsoft updates bogging the system down. I have one of the ones mentioned but havn't noticed any system slowdown though, and I personally do keep updated also via the Windows update site, but can't stand how it comes set automatically to check for updates since WinME...

Case in point. I avoid total sp1 installs, pick and choose what you want from windows update. Pay attention to the security updates that apply to your system, as many are server-only effective. That means that if you aren't running IIS or FTP or any other web service, read thru the update's technical information and see if it applies to you.
