128bit encryption problem with XP?

Ok, my brother was telling me something about how winXP couldnt access a DSL connection through a 802.11g airport card (he may have said through router too) unless 128bit encryption was disabled, because it wouldnt accept the password even though it was correct. I thought maybe it was how he had his firewall setup but there very well could be something he didnt do right on the XP machine, he's not a real big PC guy, as far as macs go he knows his s**t, one of the very few in town that kept his liscence/certificate for working on Macs. He keeps wanting to blame XP, but he's always doing that. Anyway before I go and try and prove him wrong and end up with my foot in my mouth (wouldnt be the first) I though I would ask if anyone else has heard of something like this or not.
