Devices not loading at startup

I have been trying to find an answer to this for awhile now so heres hoping someone can give me some insight on this problem
I have a upgraded computer which has video, sound, modem and ethernet all integrated on the motherboard. I am using win 98se.
Probelm is now when I start the computer up none of the devices are loaded so they all have to be reloaded with the CD that came with motherboard. I can leave computer on and the computer works fine can even restart computer but once computer is shut off for the night next day it will happen again if I defragment the drive before shutting off the computer the drivers will be loaded and computer starts fine.
I have done a spyboot virus scan registry clean and adware nothing seems to fix it to stay.
Can anyone give me any explanation to why this is happening. The hard drive was not upgraded but worked fine for a few months. It seems it could be a registry problem but not sure what to look for.
Thanks

Hi ruth29,

Just to make sure I'm following... You have no cards in the system? You're using only on-board stuff?

Was the system running OK for a while and this is something that just happened (or is this a new build?)

What does the Device Manager say? Any problems or conflicts?

True no cards are installed at all and yes it worked fine until one of grand kids downloaded Kazaa than the whole computer went sort of whacky got that un installed and ever since than this has happened.
But it does work fine once drivers are re installed for that day.
When the drivers are re installed everything shows fine on the device manager.

Hi again

Well, things have been working for quite some time, we haven't heard from you in a while

I imagine that while running the virus and spyware scans you came up with quite a bit to remove after KaZaa had done it's damage, so now a system file is somewhat unhappy about it all.

You could try something like this
1) make your usual backups of important data
2) do one more run of the virus/spyware scans
3) do one more run with RegClean (if you've been using Norton's tool, maybe it's time to try Microsoft's. Version 4.1 was updated for Win98) http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list
4) reinstall Windows "over the top" (your programs/data should stick around OK)
-----a) start computer ("with CD-ROM support") with a Win98se CD or floppy
-----b) move to the Windows directory on your hard drive and rename win.com, like this

cd C:\Windows
rename win.com win.bak

-----c) then switch to the drive letter where your Win98se installation disk is, and type the command setup. If your Cd drive is D, it should look like

D: setup

-----d) when Setup asks what Directory to install to, don't accept the suggested C:\Windows.000, but instead enter C:\Windows
-----e) have your CD key ready [If you can't find it on the Cd jewel case, before you start all this look in regedit under HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion . . . if you click on "CurrentVersion", in the box displaying to the right you should see the key listed next to "ProductKey". It is 5 sets of alphanumeric values separated by dashes.]

See if that cures your disappearing drivers.
. . . Gary

(p.s. the reinstall usually only takes about 30 minutes on today's faster computers)

Hi
Sorry I didn`t reply to your last answer was waiting to make sure the devices loaded on startup. I had to reload windows twice finally after that they loaded everytime. But have put a question in about having to reload windows and got my answers there. My question was in windows 98.
Thanks so much for the help.
