memory upgrade for laptop

Well I tried to upgrade my laptop that already has 128 md built into it by adding another 256 to it and like always it messed up

Problems are :
Freezes at random (no keyboard control or HD activity)no matter whats running . even froze at start up acouple of time

I searched Compaq's site and found others with the same model or close to it as far as laptops go have the same problem but there really no fix to it or I couldn't find it
Compaq's Techs give LAME answers like Anti-Virus software might be the problem or to many programs are running in the back ground or swap file setting are incorrect

Well I'm running Norton AntiVirus 2003 and Norton Internet Security 2003 and made it so they wouldn't load at startup and that didn't help 5 to 7 minutes into running my Laptop it froze

Well I thought hell with it and just live with the 128 md and sell the 256 md (144-pin sodimm sdram pc-133) BUT I thought I'd try one last ditch time at finding a fix by asking if anyone has gone throw this and if they did " HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU FIX IT "

Laptop is listed below

Hi toomyg,

Where did you get your RAM from? Did you try testing the RAM at all? Is it the same clock speed as the other RAM? Have you tried pulling out the 128MB and just leaving the 256MB in there on its own?

Well, those are my questions over and done with

I got the RAM from a local computer shop here and they took down my numbers off the bottom of the laptop and it took one day to get don't know how that was possable but anyways the ram is got a sticker on it labled "Crucial" with the same specs as the ram installed

As for testing no I didnt test it (guess I should have)

The 128 md thats already installed is built right into the mother board so it's no possable

Sorry didn't realise about the 128MB being built into the mobo

As for the local computer shop, if you do take down the numbers from the button of the laptop you can buy RAM especially for your machine from www.Crucial.com (looks like they have done that for you) so it should definitely be the right stuff

You can test the RAM with DocMemory from www.simmtester.com but Crucial RAM very very rarely goes wrong, I therefore doubt that this is the problem

Thank for the input !!!

I guess I'll just live with 128 mb it runs slow at some things BUT at lest it runs as for the 256 md I'll just have to put them on e-bay but I'll hang onto them for a bit just incase I can think of someother why to get them to work on the laptop

thanks again Jim

What do you mean Built in? Did you try PRYING the original Memory Module on a 45 deg angle? This will disludge, but be very casreful also and watch out for ESD in handling the RAM. You might ZAP it. In replacing it to new one INSERT it on a 45 deg angle too and push it downward.

The original 128 md that it can with is built right on the mother board and can not be removed so theres really only one expantion port to add or remove memory
