Pissed Can WinXP...?

...read FAT16 partitions?

I need to make a backup of a HD that no longer boots (I suspect a virus caused the mischief since the data is still on the drive) and I cannot access the drive from WinXP. It's displayed in the Device Manager but not in the Windows Explorer or My PC.

What do I do?

Aren't floppies FAT16? If so, I think you can see where I'm going with this...

[edit]: Also, how is XP formatted on your comp? NTFS or FAT32?

NTFS.

I have read FAT32 drives in it no problem. And I think I have even plugged in FAT16 drives and they have been read no problem. Dunno why this Quantum Bigfoot is so stubborn.

Any ideas?

Well, if it was still booable I would have suggested trying to convert it to FAT32 with win98's conversion utility, but I guess that's out of the question.

Do you have a win98 machine you could slave it to instead?

Hi NK:

Have you gone to to the Disk administrator and see what happens if you assign a drive letter?

PS: Floppy file systems are usually FAT12

The Quantum HD doesn't appear in the Disk Administrator.

The HD has given up the ghost.

I tried it in a Win98 PC and the same happens: it cannot be accessed.

I take there's no way to retrieve the data on it, is there?
