lost system ini.files

I have a n older compaq laptop with win 98. I can't boot into windows. I get messages telling me i have corruoted systm ini,\. files and they are lost. I tried running scanreg/fix, but couldn't get to the command prompt.

chas - to use plumerjr's link, you need to be able to boot the system to DOS. . . can you get that far? You mentioned that you couldn't get to a command prompt. . .

If you can't boot at all, you can try booting a Win98 Cd, or a Win98 bootable floppy (there are several available at http://www.bootdisk.com - use the version that matches your 98)

Have you had the laptop a long time, or did it just arrive as a troubled hand-me-down?

I can't boot to dos, so i will try the links you mentioned. I've had the puter for a couple years. Thanks, for the help, I will let you know how i make out.
