Slow file access in windows 2000

As the subject indicates I have extremely slow file access in windows 2000. It does not matter what program I am in if it select file save or file open the initial file system pops right up. But when I pick the drop down for save in or look in it takes up to a minute for the drop down to actually produce the file structure for me to go thru. Has anyone else come across this problem? and does anyone know how to resolve it?

Thanks for your help.

If you have a CD in any of your drives, remove it. If you have a network, make sure it's connected.

when was the last time you defragmented your hard drive?
this will sometimes speed things up.
also, how many programs do yo have running in the background, or at startup? these also tend to slow things down.
do you have antivirus running? I always leave mine on manual start and activate it before I open my mail program, or to scan floppies before I open them.
I've had good luck with memturbo, try it here:

what is your systems configuration?
