Slow file access in windows 2000

As the subject indicates I have extremely slow file access in windows 2000. It does not matter what program I am in if it select file save or file open the initial file system pops right up. But when I pick the drop down for save in or look in it takes up to a minute for the drop down to actually produce the file structure for me to go thru. Has anyone else come across this problem? and does anyone know how to resolve it?

Thanks for your help.

I have had this problem it may be related...When you open up your "My Computer" does it take a minute for your drives to show up? When I had my two HD's and CD drives setup the first time the master/slave and IDE1 IDE2 were alittle sloppy so after I set the OS HD to IDE1 Master and Storage HD to IDE1 Slave with the CD drives on IDE2 everything sped up and read correctly, check your jumpers and make sure your devices are configured for maximum performance hope this helps you alittle

Thanks for the thought, but this is a prebuilt dell with single drive on each controller. Everything checks out ok as far as physical config goes.

I have asked the user to do that. So, based on the user always doing what I ask I plan on running one tonight after he is gone. Good thought.

System has been defragged and all mapped network drives are disconnected. No improvement. I am going to do a repair next and if that does not work on the rebuild. John, we removed those pesky BNC connectors and replaced it with a high powered sneaker network. HEHEHE
