"Over the top" Install 98 Directions

I have been given general directions on how to install Win 98 “over the top” and just want to double check to see that the information is correct and complete.
When I built my pc I copied 98se onto my hard drive(named it win98) and then installed it from there, so everything I need is there I assume.

Are the following directions correct?

In Explorer, rename win.com to win.bak in the c:\windows folder.
Go to Start > Run > browse for the setup.exe on your hard drive since you copied all the .cab files there and run it. Make sure you install to c:\windows when prompted, and NOT c:\windows.000

I assume that I am to browse and then run the setup.exe that I find in “win98” Right?

Should I do all this in Safe Mode to avoid an increased risk of errors?

Is there anything that I should know regarding reinstalling drivers again?

That's all there is to it. Safe mode or not, doesn't matter, because the setup will restart the machine in DOS anyhow.
All drivers should be retained. You'll have to do Windows updates all over again though.

Hi

I thought that an "over top" would give me the original unaltered copy of 98 again, where video card and motherboard drivers etc would have to be installed once again.

You see, I need to get Direct X out and start again, and my Radeon 9000 was improperly installed the first time in such a way that I am unable to correct it. So, I want a fresh start with 98 without losing data, if that is at all possible. If I must I will do a reformat, but as a last option.

Please correct my misunderstanding

I thought I'd post back with the results of my over the top 98 install.

It went very well. However, DirectX 9 is still there as are all of my drivers too. I was not promted to install anything, or do anything. Everything looks the same as before and eveything is working the same as before, as far as I can tell. I wanted to get DirectX 9 off my 98.
Next, I will try a remover called DirectX Extractor.

This program says that after the removal I must install the original DirectX that comes with 98. I do not know how to do this. Please advise me how to get this accomplished. I have a copy of 98 on to my hard drive so I don't need the cd.

Seems like with version 9 gone, yet another over-the-top would reinstall the Win98se version - which I think is 6 or 7. But your Radeon drivers will still be there.

Here's a fairly long quote of a procedure pam123 got from ATi support when she had to manually remove an older Ati driver to make room for a new Radeon (this is about a year old now, I think)

"I've had my own run-ins with their tech support and this is their instruction for a clean install of a video card and its drivers for windows95/98/98se. I used it on my 32mb DDR Radeon.

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK. Place a check in Selective startup, and uncheck load startup group items
-uncheck process autoexec.bat>uncheck process confis.sys ( if available)
-click OK and reboot
-remove the current ATI multimedia center and/or DVD player using add/remove programs in the control panel
-select NO when prompted to reboot. Then remove the ATI Display Driver. DO NOT REBOOT
-double click on My comp. on your desk top. ..double click on the C drive>double click on programfiles
-delete the ati multimedia folder>DO NOT REBOOT
-go to Start>Run>type regedit>click OK>click on registry on the menu bar
-export the registry to the desktop
-click on the plus sign beside Hkey local machine>click on the + sign besides software
-delete the ATI folders
-click onthe + sign beside the Hkey current user> click on the + sign beside software
-delete any ATI folders
-exit registry

Reboot to safemode

to do this you can hold down CTRL or hit F8 to bring up the MS starup menu
-select #3 to boot to safe mode

-open the Control panel and double click on System
-first select Performance and the Graphics button to ensure that the perforomance slider is set to full-if not, then change it but do not restart

-then select the Device Manager Tab and click on the + sign next to the display adapters.
-remove ALL VIDEO CARDS LISTED UNDER THE DISPLAY ADAPTER HEADING.
-remove all monitors as well.

-also click on the + sign beside the Sound Video and Games and remove anything that says ATI

-reboot to Normal Mode. Windows will detect new hardware
-cancel this and seleect No if prompted to reboot.

-open Device Manager.
-double click on the video card listed here and select the Driver Tab
-select Update Driver and the Display A List.
-Select Show All Hardware and then Standard Display Type VGA
-Apply the changes and reboot.

-install the new display drivers by double clicking on the driver download or by running the ATI installation cd.
-reboot

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK
-place a check in Normal startup, click OK and reboot
-test the system.

There you have it , the clean install at full length an unabridged, exactly as directed by ATI tech support.
If you figure out a good short cut let me know but I can say that this works"

I don't know that you'll have to jump through that many hoops or not, but I think that at the start of the whole procedure it might help to switch to the Standard VGA driver. [If you haven't done that before, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, select Device Manager, select Display Adapters, select your adapter, select Properties, select Driver, select Update Driver, select Next ("the wizard searches. . . "), select "Display a list of all the drivers . . .", select "show all hardware", from the left-side box, select "Standard Display Types", and then from the right-side box, select "Standard Display Adapter (VGA), then click "Next". You'll be limited to 640x480 and 16 colors [which is a pain to work with, but this is how it's done when working on graphics drivers]. When finished with your complete uninstall, you can install the Radeon with a recent driver & presto, beauty and speed will return to your screen.

Then you need to do the install from DOS and not from within Windows.. what you wrote above tells me that the install didn't take place -.Trust me..
If Win98 would be installed new on top of the old one - followong things would be gone - IE all updated versions , directX any versions , Outlook ...
If you need a step by step then let me know I mean to install from DOS and not from within Windows - hope this helps.
