Question Enough power for XP?

Hi
I am thinking of upgrading my system to Windows XP from Windows 98 but I'm not sure if my machine will be powerful enough to handle it here is the spec:

400mhz Celeron
256MB RAM
8.5Gig HD

I have XP running on a 400mhz P2, and it runs decent, though it's no speed demon.

I've seen WinXP running on a 233MHz PII with 64MB of RAM before!
It was running great, except for WMP crashing when trying to play a video.

The speed of your CPU is the minimum required - so that's OK.

However, if you're sticking with that 8.5Gb HD, then you'll have to manage your HD space very carefully. System Restore, Recycle Bin, and each TIF can take up a lot of space; however you can limit these to about 10% of HD space. If you don't, it could easily push you up to 8GB.

The cardinal sin is making your Windows partition too small and then running out of room when you install updates like SP1.

Many of the guys have said the 6Gb-8Gb is a realistic size for the Windows partition. However, I have read of guys, who with careful management, have pared it down to much less.

However, I think it might be wise to consider getting a another HD before you upgrade.

Anyway, that's my view and that's what I would do.

Cool

I agree that a 8.5G HD is pushing it. I have a 8G partition for XP, updates and drivers and 6.5 is used. I have programs, applications and data files on other partitions.

Granted I don't manage my XP disk usage as close as some, but still I feel 8.5 is pushing it.

Yeah XP should run fine on that system, I had XP Pro run fine on a 400MHz Celeron before.

I have a P11 300 mhz 128MB 66 mhz Sdram with a 2.8 GB 5000 RPM WD HD in our basement and it's connected via a Wireless PCI Card to my Wireless DSL Router located in the 2nd Floor and it is working great running XP Pro and loaded Office 2000 and some Software like Adobe and IPhoto. What I did is slave an old Quantum Bigfoot HDrive for my files storage. I can surf the Net without any problem and do the file and printer sharing too.

I don't want to argue with the experts here, cause im pretty new to computer building, and dealing with software, but Im running XP in a PIV machine, and the HD is 3.25 gigs, and it's a ROYAL pain to keep everything down. I have Age Of Empires on it, and a couple messaging programs, and like Kazaa Lite, and i have 200 MB to spare. And i also have all the hot fixes and SP1. I would think that 8.5 would be plenty, but you definitely would be hurting for space, but not critically so. Fortunately, twenty minutes ago, i ordered a SE WD 120 gigger. (WOOHOO)

Back when XP was released first I did run it on a P-Pro System with 92Mb Ram and it did run very well - my son was even playing Need for speed and Counter Strike with that configuration for quite a long time..

never had any problems to run it - so go on - if you like to speed up XP the give it a lot of RAM.!
