40 gig hard drive wont boot
I wanted to swap my 20 gig out for a WD 40 gig when I loaded XP in after formatting. The 40 wouldnt boot with the floppy tools disk or normally. It woont boot into dos. It works with the 20 gig drive so its not a memory or cable issue. Could it be a BIOS update thats needed?

Are U saying Xp is loaded on the 40G drive?? A littly fuzzy is your description of exactly what U did...Is 40G partitioned and formatted?? If I understand U correctly U swapped it in place of your 20G drive, loaded winXP on it and now it just won't boot from it??????
It could be just go into your BIOS and either redetect drives or set IDE primary master to auto.. Also see 2 PC in your sig.... Which one are we talking about here?? I would say both are modern enough to be able to correctly handle 40G drive....

No,I had to reinstall my 20 gig because the 40 gig wouldnt boot. The 40 gig is the new drive I wanted to install. I was getting 'boot failures' and 'cant boot to DOs' messages.

Apparently the 40 gig was recognized so just set your BIOS to boot from CD first, save changes & exit and boot with the XP cd in. XP should fdisk & format and install.

I did set it to boot from cdrom and didnt get anywhere with the 40 gig HD. Why would it work with the 20(INSTALL) and not with the 40?

I tried both options. The fold out paper has the jumper horizontal on bottom row one pin in from the right. (Single drive)and the instruction booklet has it without the jumper on. No luck either way. I definately think its worth starting from scratch again because I could use another 20 gigs because Im a Kazaaholic. If I burn anymore backups to cdrs Ill be able to build a house made of cdrs!!!Its a new 40 gid WD drive and I hope its not DOA because I dont save receipts.

Even without receipt you could always go to WD Site and ask for RMA. As long as it is still under warranty they will replace it without problem, that if its DOA. All they need is the Model and SN of the HD. I have sent many defective HDs to them via Priority Mail. Try dowloading their Diagnostic Software first and see what it says. HTH.
