Boot into Dos and type: deltree c:\recycled then hit enter, then reboot and windows will recreate the recycle bin.

You can download and try TweakUI from MicroSoft, as sometimes it can fix the Recycle bin, and / or you can see if this will help:

Just out of curiousity, what do you see when you go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Effects . . . and up in the box displaying to the top there should be a list of the icons for your system desktop items (like My Computer, Network Neighborhood, My Documents, and Recycle Bin (full) & Recycle Bin (empty) ...?
See if choosing a new icon restores it [by clicking on the action button "Change Icon"] (this might be an easy way to re-create that Registry value without having to mess with regedit). Then you can change the icon back to your regular icon once it has reappeared. & hi there Roger & Rails . . . Gary |

Tweakui for windows 98. Let us know if this works.
Here is something else to try: Go to Start>Run, type regedit. Backup the registry first: Then navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} The value in the right pane next to (Default) is Recycle Bin. Make sure this key exists in the registry. Last edited by Redo40; 06-02-2003 at 09:35 PM. |

Open notepad and copy and paste the following and save the file as recyclefix.reg. Double-click on the file to merge the contents into the registry. Of course, backup the registry before making any changes to it.
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}] @="Recycle Bin" "InfoTip"="Contains deleted items you can permanently remove or restore." Ok.....go to folder options and check to show all files, then go to your c: drive and right click on the recycle bin and send it to the desktop and a shortcut will be placed there.

Hi again
I know it seems silly to reinstall Windows to solve one like this, but it would probably work, and you still have all your programs and data OK if you use the "over-the-top" method (though you do have to reinstall some Critical Updates after). If you haven't tried the over-the-top before, here's how it goes: _____________________ Boot with a bootable floppy or CD - "with CD-rom support", and from DOS rename the win.com file to win.bak. Like this C: cd \Windows rename win.com win.bak Then switch to the drive letter of your CD drive [often drive D:], and start setup (by simply type the command: setup) When Windows asks if you want to use the directory C:\Windows.000, instead select "Other" and type in C:\Windows [without the .000 following]. You'll need your CD-key handy. If you've lost your CD-key: before you start the reinstall look for it by starting regedit from the Start/Run box, then navigate to the key (you navigate in regedit like you do in Windows Explorer) HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion . . . if you click on "Current Version", you should see a list of keys and values in the box displaying on your right. One of these will read "ProductKey" and will consist of 5 sets of 5 alphanumeric characters = your CD key. Be careful when in regedit just to look at things and not make accidental changes. The nice thing about these "over-the-top" reinstalls is that they usually don't take much time, you might be OK in as little as 45 minutes. ________________________ It's rather the long way home, but it should get you there. . . . Gary |

do you have Active Desktop enabled? and if so, is it set to hide your desktop icons when the desktop is viewed as a web page?

serum17 - I'm thinking that if pillianp's suggestion doesn't work, and Roger's Registry patches didn't work, you might as well go ahead with the over-the-top reinstall. Otherwise it might be a while waiting for an exact match to your problem.
This is that aggravating type of problem that seems like it should take two minutes to fix, but ends up taking two days of looking around. . . . . . Gary |

I second that...I have searched everywhere and haven't come up with anything that we haven't already tried and personally don't know what to do next (if pillainp's suggestion doesn't work) other than an over the top or complete reinstall.
